Re: Electric Outboards

I didn't see price. With most of the larger power electric outboards,
the price has historically been more than the price of most San Juan
24s. I think they're designed for people with party/pontoon boats on
lakes that prohibit outboards. If it were 5 hp for close to the price
of that 3 hp Briggs & Stratton (under $1000) then I'd consider it,
despite battery weight. If it's a $6000 propulsion system, I wouldn't
pay it, but I can easily rationalize being a cheapskate. If I were to
spend that money on the boat it would be for other stuff.

The later post hits it right on the battery weight. You'd have the
immobile weight one large crew member, and you'd better put it very
close to the center of gravity to avoid screwing up trim. I'd think
it is possible -- I have two big batteries, one in each locker, and
another two could be put below the step.

All batteries need to be secure and in spill proof battery cases. You
can get sealed batteries, but I think they're a bit more expensive and
a bit less efficient than regular deep cycles.

Wiring would also be a bit of a headache. That's a lot of wattage to
get from the batteries down below to the transom, and I'm not sure if
the system would be designed for such a long run.

Finally, I've always puzzled over an easy and inexpensive way to run a
12 volt electrical system for lights, radio and navigation from
batteries wired in series for higher voltage. I'm sure that if you
bought the entire propulsion system you could get that, but it wasn't
something I felt comfortable experimenting with when I was using the
electric trolling motor.

And recharging would likely require shore power.
