Re: Outboards
I see that my recollection of price was too optimistic.
Gil gave me the tutorial in converting lbs thrust to hp a few years
back. Horsepower = (thrust(lb) x speed(ft/sec)/550 I'd guess that
the Briggs pushes their claimed 3 hp and it appears to require the
right boat, to get the maximum performance. I could get 2.25 knots
with my 55 lb thrust motor on a San Juan 24.
The claimed 3 hp wouldn't meet the San Juan 24 class 4hp requirement.
It might still be a bit weak for those of you in fast tidal areas,
but for maneuvering in a harbor or the trips I make on the river to
and from winter storage it would be fine.
In our archive you can find discussions of my MinnKota 55 operations.
It worked fine for years, in the right conditions, and was only
replaced because I wanted to comply with the class rules. Frankly, I
got spoiled with my new gasoline outboard, as it is nice to have the
excess hp in a reliable gas motor.
An electric outboard of low power (like my 55 lb thrust) should not be
used if you expect to be able to motor out of trouble. Better to sail
out of trouble or avoid it in the first place.
